How long will my treatment take?
This page does not give you a completion date. Your own timeline is written in your treatment plan after an examination. A dentist examines you in person before your plan is final.
Turkey's patient rights regulation says you should be given information about how the proposed intervention is carried out and its estimated duration1. Ask for the treatment stages, any healing intervals and the points where the next step is decided to be shown separately in your plan.
You can use the sections below when discussing your own schedule with your dentist.
- Ask for your own timeline in your treatment plan after examination.
- Ask separately about treatment stages, healing intervals and checks.
- Find out what needs to be assessed before the next stage.
- Discuss your health and the time you can make available for appointments.
What determines the duration?
When discussing your schedule, ask about what needs to be assessed before the final procedure:
- Diagnosis and scope. Find out which teeth need treatment and the proposed order of procedures. Imaging is also selected according to the examination and individual clinical need2.
- Gum health. If implants are being considered, active gum disease needs treatment first3. Ask whether this is a stage in your plan.
- Extractions or bone grafts. Ask whether you need these and in what order the procedures would be done. A bone graft can increase bone at the implant site3.
- Healing. An implant's integration with bone takes time, and replacement-tooth timing varies4. Find out what will be checked during the waiting period.
- Laboratory work. If crowns or veneers are planned, ask how manufacture and trial fitting would fit into the schedule.
- Your health and availability. Share your health conditions, medicines and the time you can make available for appointments. Ask your dentist how these affect your plan.
Stages of fillings and root canal treatment
For a filling, ask how preparing the tooth, placing the filling and checking the bite would proceed in your treatment. Request the teeth to be treated and the proposed procedure for each tooth in your written plan.
For root canal treatment, ask how cleaning and filling the canals and restoring the top of the tooth are planned. Find out what the final restoration would be and at which stage it would be made.
A Cochrane review compared different appointment arrangements for root canal treatment. It found no evidence that one arrangement was more effective than the other5. The same review found that people were more likely to report pain in the first week after single-visit treatment5. These findings come from published studies, not from our own records, and they do not set a number of appointments for you. Ask why the proposed arrangement is recommended.
Our root canal treatment page explains assessment and options.
Planning and making crowns and veneers
If you are considering a crown or veneer, ask which of these steps would be included in your plan and in what order:
- assessment of the teeth and gums;
- seeing the planned shape and discussing changes;
- tooth preparation, impressions or scans, and any temporary restoration;
- laboratory manufacture, trial fitting and final placement;
- a check after placement.
For crowns and veneers, you see the planned shape before they are finished and can ask for changes.
Ask for the estimated timing of laboratory work in writing. Ask how the schedule would be handled if a change were needed after a trial fitting. Discuss the reasons for the proposed material and treatment rather than deciding solely on a completion date.

Implants: placement, healing and the final tooth
For implants, implant placement and the timing of the final replacement tooth are separate stages4. Integration with bone takes time. Temporary crowns, bridges or dentures may be used4 while final teeth are made. Ask whether a temporary tooth is being considered for you.
Hospital patient information describes taking impressions and attaching the teeth6 during the final restorative phase. Ask how healing will be assessed in your own plan and when the decision to start that phase would be made.
A human tissue study after tooth extraction found that temporary connective tissue formed consistently in the first weeks, while the timing of bone formation was much less predictable7. The study's tissue-sampling intervals are not a healing schedule for you.
Ask for the proposed extraction, grafting, implant and final-tooth stages in writing. Ask what needs to be checked before dates for each stage are confirmed.
Orthodontic assessment and follow-up
Professional patient information for adults describes examination, possible X-rays and photographs, discussion of options, and impressions when needed8 at the initial assessment.
Ask your dentist in what order starting braces or aligners, checking tooth movement, reviewing the plan when needed and retention afterwards would happen. Request the check intervals and what you are expected to do in writing.
For mild to moderate crowding, a systematic review reported low-certainty evidence of similar treatment duration with clear aligners and fixed appliances9. This does not provide a duration for every orthodontic condition. If a method is described as quicker for you, ask for the reasoning.
What should your own timeline include?
After examination, ask for these details in your written plan:
- the proposed procedures and teeth to be treated;
- their order and estimated timing;
- any healing intervals and assessment points;
- when temporary and final restorations would be considered;
- what needs to be assessed before moving to the next stage;
- how to obtain an updated timeline if the plan changes;
- whom to contact for checks and care.
Under Turkey's patient rights regulation, you can examine your file and records and obtain a copy1. Ask for a copy of your plan too.
You can say no, or ask to stop, at any stage.1 Discuss the possible consequences and what needs to be done at the current stage with your dentist.

Common questions
Can I get a definite completion date before examination?
Ask for your own timeline in your plan after examination. Ask separately about procedure stages, any healing intervals and what needs to be assessed before the next step.
How do I find out the number of appointments for root canal treatment?
Ask your dentist about the appointment arrangement proposed for you and why. Also ask how and at which stage the top of the tooth would be restored in your plan.
Is a temporary implant tooth the same stage as the final tooth?
A temporary tooth and the final tooth may be considered at separate stages. Ask whether a temporary tooth is planned for you and what needs to be checked before moving to the final tooth.
Is clear aligner treatment always quicker?
The review described here does not give that definite conclusion. Discuss the proposed method, estimated duration and the reasons for that estimate in your own case with your dentist.
What should I request if the schedule changes?
Ask why it has changed, what the next step is and the revised estimated timing. Request a written copy of the updated plan and timeline.
